Sine Squared

  1. Have you been reading any of Slate’s articles on how to get more people interested in math/science? there was a link to a study about kids learning math and how the system goes about it wrong – I think the real problem was “just learn it this way” versus actually explaining what the teacher was doing and why.

    1. I haven’t. Sounds like an interesting discussion though.

Context, purpose, background and application can be so powerful in motivating and educating people. At the same time, I think about the Karate Kid and the whole “wax on, wax off” phenomenon. Bloom’s taxonomy seems to agree by suggesting knowledge comes before understanding. So, maybe I should just drill them and then show them how to fight. That doesn’t quite fit though. Give ’em context, purpose, background, application. Make them run drills AND give them an opportunity to inquire on their own. Then, I think some magic can happen.

I should probably read the articles before I spout any more…

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I really like Fourier’s story. It is a great example of the value of historical context. Mathematics is the gift of real people who lived real lives.
